TYPES AND DEGREES OF GUM DISEASE

Q: Are there different kinds of gum disease?

A: Gum disease, also called periodontal disease or periodontitis, comes in different forms and degrees:

  • Gingivitis is the mildest form. Gingivitis sufferers will experience red, swollen gums that bleed easily, often just from the act of brushing your teeth. Gingivitis usually causes no discomfort and can be reversed with professional care and good oral hygiene at home.
  • Chronic periodontitis causes inflammation in the tissue that supports the teeth. Infection forms in the pockets between the gum and the teeth and leads to bone loss and detachment of the teeth.
  • Aggressive periodontitis is a more severe form. It causes rapid bone destruction and loss of teeth.
  • Necrotizing periodontal disease is an infection that kills tissue, ligaments and bone and can spread, causing damage to cheeks and jaw. The disease is commonly associated with people who have a systemic disease like HIV infection or diabetes.

The best way to avoid gum disease is to visit your dentist regularly — at least twice a year — and to brush and floss regularly. Ask your dentist about other ways to keep your gums healthy.
