LOST CROWN OR FILLING

Q: What should I do in the event of a lost crown or filling?

A: Accidents like the one you describe can happen. It’s especially possible with temporary fillings and crowns. If you lose a filling or crown, see your dentist as soon as possible. In some cases, you can temporarily reattach a crown with an over-the-counter product and hold it in place until you can see your dentist. If a crown or filling comes out, try to save it for examination by the dentist. A crown sometimes can be reused.

Though a crown or filling can be loosened by biting on an unpopped popcorn kernel or some other hard object, a lost filling or crown can also indicate that decay has worked its way under the restored part of the tooth. And be careful when eating. Biting on a hard object like the kernel mentioned above can break an otherwise whole, healthy tooth. If the tooth is causing you discomfort, take an over-the-counter analgesic like acetaminophen.
