Dental X-ray exams are safe. The very low levels of radiation exposure with dental x-rays makes the risk of potentially harmful effects very small. Digital radiography generates an even lower amount of radiation…less than a third of that generated for conventional film radiographs. Even with digital radiography, a leaded apron which minimizes exposure to the abdomen and a leaded thyroid collar which protects the thyroid from radiation are used.

Dental x-rays are generally abstained from during pregnancy, but in an emergency, using two leaded aprons, an x-ray can be taken safely.

In general, the risk of not being able to detect unseen dental pathology by avoiding x-rays far outweighs the very low risk with dental radiographs.
