A DENTAL EXAM CAN BE A LIFE-SAVER
Mary Meyler was a regular patient at the dental clinic at Coastal Carolina Community College in Jacksonville, NC. And it was a routine visit there in 2011 that may have literally been a lifesaver for the 71-year-old.

As Kaylah Piner, a 23-year-old second-year dental student, performed her role as hygienist, she noticed that her patient had an enlarged thyroid. After Meyler confided that she’d recently put on some weight, Piner thought it sounded like the experience she’d had with her own mother, who had thyroid cancer. Piner shared that information with Meyler and Meyler went for an exam and a biopsy that confirmed that the growth in the thyroid was 30 percent cancerous. Surgery successfully removed the cancerous portion of Meyler’s thyroid.

Had the situation not been addressed quickly, Meyler’s outcome could have been very different. This is another example of how a dental exam can turn up conditions of which a patient might not have been aware. Talk with your dentist about health problems other than dental ones that can be detected in an oral exam.
